So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Metal Beer 2: The Sequel….This Time, it’s Personal
April 28, 2014
As often happens when I find myself thinking too much about things I shouldn't anymore, last night saw me once again pulling up a stool at Trve to have a few pints with some friends. This above most things has been a welcome distraction and generally one of my favorite activities to “turn my frown upside down” when time allows (Mr Rogers quote just now….take a drink). While I always enjoy being at Trve, this time was particularly rewarding for a few reasons.
I was elated to find that Tipareth, the sour ale aged in red wine barrels, is now available in 375ML bottles that you can have in the taproom. Having just jump started my friends car prior to heading to Trve, I thought one of these would be an appropriate reward to myself for doing something nice for someone that day (way to celebrate small achievements self….thanks buddy) Tipareth is a beer that I find borders on an existential experience each time that I’ve had it, with a complexity of flavors and aromas that I have a hard time finding an equal for. It’s expensive as far as a single beer at the taproom goes, but totally worth it (especially when you’re having a shit day and need to treat yourself to something good).
I also took the opportunity to try the new Double IPA on tap, Nazareth. I took my time to enjoy this one, because it was really good and because it’s 10.9% ABV (Now that’ll put some hair on your chest son). While savoring my beer and checking out the latest pictures on the wall, I started to think about my own IPA recipe and whether it could be modified to be a double. I’ve decided to leave Bollywood IPA as it is, and instead try something completely new. I have a large swoth of German hops cones in cold storage at home, and some grains that were meant for another beer that never came to fruition. This could result in either a glorious and unique creation on an epic failure in my quest to create a new Double IPA. Now what to name this new mad science experiment?
I would find it appropriate to give reference to the German hops that will be used, the inspiration I’ve received from frequenting Trve Brewing, and take the micky out on the crap that’s been floating through my brain all too often. After some tinking of some options and chugging down one last Hellion it came to me: My new Double IPA will be dubbed the Herzlose Schlampe (I’ll just come right out and say it before you Google what that means, it’s probably going to offend at least one of you). And with that, it's now time to get my brew on. Of course, I will post updates on here on the progress (I promise they won't be as half assed as what I did for the Roggenbier). I'm sure there will be more metal beer moments to come as well, but in the interim I will leave you with this pearl of wisdom that hit me during this last session at Trve: When life gives you lemons, throw them at life's face as hard as you can.
