So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Brewery of the Week: Former Future Brewing Company
May 11, 2014
More than once I was told about an enigmatic new brewery on South Broadway that was brewing classic beer recipes in very unique ways. A true beer nerds brewery, in which the pints are a marriage of the best parts of homebrewing scaled up and altered to be something different in the crowd of Denver breweries. The problem with hunting down this brewery (and in said difficulty justifying my use of the word “enigmatic” earlier) was that I was never given a straight answer in what this place was called. “Future something I think” or “Pretty sure it’s called Former Brewing…yeah that’s it” were statements that were often in recommendations (which doesn't bode well for the short term memory skills of many of my fellow beer nerds). Finally I was able to find Former Future Brewing; a refreshing entry in the beer scene and I am so glad that I did.
It is clear from the first sip of your initial beer that this is a brewery that is trying to do something different and unique. From the wild yeast Saison (which it is my understanding that the yeast was in fact harvested locally) with its fruity and earthy tones to the Rye ESB which tasted almost exactly like my own homebrewed rye goodness, Former Future does a great job of taking beers that are commonplace and turning them into a memorable pint. I would recommend keeping an eye on the chalkboard pallet to see what is available, as some of the more popular beers were crossed off during the course of my time there.
Former Future also does a great job at being inviting and simple, while still having a truly unique taproom. It took me a moment to realize the riveted counter at which I was sitting was actually an old plane wing, the most boisterous piece of décor in the brewery. The tables and bar are setup in such a way articulates the simple yet cool décor (an example being the light bulb and suitcases behind the wing-bar, which had me expecting Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstien to tell me about their artisan lightbulbs at any moment). Living up to all of the hype, Former Future is without question a beer nerds brewery. That being said, even the most mild of beer enthusiasts will enjoy having a good pint or two at this solid up and comer in the Denver beer scene.
