So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Brewery of the Week: Comrade Brewing Company
June 23, 2014
Prior to making my first trek to Comrade Brewing Co. I had been a little taken back with the reputation that this brewery had within just weeks of opening. In particular, there had been several people I knew who are not members of the beer enthusiast culture in Colorado who were excited to tell me about their experience at Comrade. Any place that can elicit this kind of reaction is worth exploring and I quickly came to find that this reputation was well earned.
One thing that is evident the moment you take your first sip of a Comrade brew is that these guys know are knowledgeable about how to make solid beers from complex recipes. My first pint was the Superpower IPA, which is characterized by an almost floral aroma and citrusy flavors while also not overshadowing the subtle flavors of the malts used (something that happens far too often with IPA’s of late). The Better ChocoLATE Than Never is also a fantastic darker offering by Comrade, with a distinct taste of cocoa nibs that is reminiscent of really good semi sweet chocolate (insert Portlandia “Cacao” joke here…)
The atmosphere in Comrade is also just plain fun. Evoking just enough soviet era flare to compliment the otherwise simple interior and classy screens displaying what’s on tap, I found it all too easy to turn what was to be a quick afternoon pint into an all evening excursion. The staff behind the bar were also some of the nicest I’ve met in a taproom, giving great advice and making sure everyone walked away with a good pint and a smile. I will most likely be back at Comrade this weekend for another round of awesome beer, and I hope that all of you are able to do the same.
