So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Thinkin’ Beer: Newer, Better and more Awesometastic
March 26, 2015
This evening’s Thinkin’ Beer was an indulgence I had picked up earlier this week as a treat to myself for surviving a particularly long day of work and school. It’s been a bit of a surreal start to the week, having both accolades and inconveniences professionally mixed with a blend of leisurely activities and stressful accountabilities at home. Overall this whirlwind of things has kept me busy but for the most part it was in good ways. Even so, I needed a moment to myself to just relax with a dog in my lap and a beer in my hand. Given that this was a treat I was affording myself for the night I decided I should have a bomber that matched the occasion and pulled the bottle of Chocolate Ale from Boulevard Brewing’s Smokestack Series off the shelf.
This beer is something of a white whale for me in that I have always made a point to look for it when perusing a bomber shelter of any quality (I found this particular bottle at Colorado Liquor Mart for those of you in Denver, they are fantastic) and I generally end up taking home other options. This obsession started after the first time I had the Chocolate Ale at Euclid Hall a few years ago, and found the more savory aspects that one would expect from cocoa nibs married well with the sweeter lighter tones of malt. In fact, the only thing I remember about that particular trip to one of my favorite restaurants is this beer, drowning out the food and company at the time. Everyone has that one thing that is a craving above all others. For some that might be something that is relatively easy to find but underappreciated to the rest of the world, for folks like me it’s a rare delicacy that is made all the more special on those occasions that it is found. That brings me to our mildly cheesy first thought or the night:
Beer Thought #1: Sometimes it’s good to embrace your inner Ahab.
Speaking of whales, one of my more awesome possessions has graced the photos accompanying several of the photos on the blog and garnered some comments from y’all. I’m referring to the super awesome whale bottle opener that you can see in the picture above (I’ve named it Reginald by the way) which was something I needed for obvious reasons and looked pretty nifty to boot. Looking around my house I’m rather impressed at just how much of the accoutrements around my place make me happy. A little over a year ago I came home to a house that looked like it had been ransacked, leaving a crappy couch in the living room and a wedding dress in the closet left as some salt for freshly opened wound (don’t worry I’m not about to get all “woe is me” on you, my life is pretty swell at the moment). The thing about an empty house is that it is ripe for possibilities. I have done everything from changing the location of my bedroom to meeting the goal of putting a piece of art on almost every wall, including a chrome impala head (…you know you want one) and now this is truly MY house. Everyone needs their own space and it’s pretty awesome that I finally have mine.
Beer Thought #2: When you’re grown up your parents can’t give you crap about your posters.
As I finished pouring the rest of the bomber and took in the warmly sweet aroma of chocolate emanating from the dark amber brew I decided to catch up on a few episodes of one of the shows I’ve been enjoying of late. I normally try to keep myself in check with the amount of TV and vid’ya games I take in, but tonight I decided to give into this wicked case of the fuckits I have. My list of shows and movies that people say I need to watch continues to grow faster than I can watch them so I have been prioritizing based on my mood. Recently I’ve gotten through all of the seasons of Game of Thrones, which is the best worst show ever, and tonight I’m getting through the first few episodes of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt at a friends suggestion (it’s actually pretty damn hilarious). One of these days I’ll get through all of these watchables but for now I’m fairly content by getting through them an episode or two at a time. These little nuggets of leisure are rarer for me these days but taking the last few sips of my beer with the TV on and no homework in front of me, it’s brought me to the final thought of the evening:
Beer Thought # 3: Bojack Horseman is freakin’ hilarious.
Ok folks I’m calling it an evening. For any of you with the opportunity I strongly recommend picking up a bomber of Boulevard Chocolate Ale, it won’t disappoint. And remember the next time you have an exhausting day, it’s ok to give in to the Fuckits. Cheers Everyone!
