So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Bomber of the Week: Mourning Wood by Local Option Bierwerker
March 31, 2015
One of the more cherished traditions I’ve established for my weekends is the Sunday Shower Beer. Generally this is accompanied by the equally important extra few hours of sleep I afford myself on the day, making the bomber I enjoy in the shower something of a brunch to ensure a positive start to my day. Yesterday I was feeling a bit sluggish having had an activity filled Saturday, and decided that this Sunday beer needed to be both worthy of the day and give me a bit of a wake up. Naturally this narrowed my choices something brewed with coffee and I wasn’t in the mood for my heavy stouts in this vein. I ended up pulling a smaller but more intriguing bottle from the shelf that looked to meet my needs and provide some awesome label art to top it all off. And with that, it was time to get the day going with some Mourning Wood.
Opening the bottle an unabashed waft of strong coffee asserts itself with the nostrils. The other heavy hitter in this beer also makes a redolent appearance with some oaky notes making the aroma that much more complex. Most people expect a beer made with coffee to as dark and murky as a tall drip but the caramel tones and thick head add a refreshing visual element that hints at the tastes to come.
The tastes that accompany the other queues in Mourning Wood are more subtle and varied than one might imagine. The flavors at the front of the pallet are subdued notes of caramel and oak that are pleasant and notable while remaining relatively mild. The coffee that is so present in the aroma reappears at the back of the pallet with clear qualities of a well roasted coffee with only minor hints of acid and bitterness. Each sip finishes with an aftertaste that I would equate to a good coffee ice cream both sweet and unquestionably grounded in a solid dark roast.
Having Mourning Wood as my Sunday Shower beer was the perfect start to a lazy day and planted this on the short list of well crafted light coffee brews. It may require a bit of a search for some to acquire this particular bottle, but should you happen to come across one it is worth picking up. Now, pour yourself a pint and take a sip for every time the name Mourning Wood is used in a non-joke/pun capacity in this post (not that it wasn’t tempting……I’m an adult I swear). Cheers Everyone!
