So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Brewery of the Week: Craft Draft by Jelly Belly
April 2, 2015
I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two distinct groups of people: Those who were chocolate kids growing up and those who enjoyed everything else in the candy realm. While I will admit to being in the former category I am not opposed to the tangy sweet and sugary items that are out there. This time of year there is one confection that seems to encompass all of these traits and is often tied with fond memories of Easter and family for many of us, myself included. I’m referring of course the jelly beans and more specifically Jelly Belly’s. I do indeed enjoy these little sugary pieces of awesome so when they announced they were opening their flagship craft brewery in Denver I had to make sure I set aside time to see what this was all about.
This may sound like a weird combination, but when you think about it, the two are actually a pretty good fit. In fact when speaking with the brewmaster at Craft Draft it makes allot of sense in a weird kind of way; the premise behind the brewery is to put the flavors everyone knows and loves from Jelly Belly in another form that adults can enjoy as well as kids. These included some beers that were surprisingly good and offered more than just a gimmick in a glass. The Coconut Jelly Belly Porter was particularly good offering a solid balance of sweet and toasty flavors and aromas. Another fantastic brew on tape was the Raspberry Jelly Belly Red, which is made with actual raspberry jelly beans and it shows in the sweetness found in the pints.
The atmosphere of Craft Draft is a mix of childish whimsy and the bar that the grown up cool kids frequent. The brightly colored accoutrements around the bar and tables evoke almost an 80’s retro style while the mellow lighting from the Edison bulbs and darkly stained wood keep things from getting too cheesy. While packed, the crowd also seemed quite happy to be remember the tastes of their youth which came through in their attitudes towards each other. The bar staff were also quite welcoming and knowledgeable and appeared to genuinely enjoy what they were doing. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane in beer form and if you give it a try I’m sure you will too. Cheers everyone!
