So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Bomber of the Week: Lemon Chiffon Crueller Ale by Rogue/Voodoo Doughnut Collaboration
April 29, 2015
As a rule I tend to regard anything in a bright pink container as something that is the result of or will result in bad choices, particularly if that container is a bottle. It’s a cyclical experience with these things really; too much cotton candy tasted good and all, but it will ultimately make your teeth and stomach hurt, which leads to a shot of an infamous bright pink liquid from your medicine cabinet. It is this ill-reputed nature that made me wary of the neon pink bottle that was practically screaming at me from the top shelf of my local liquor store’s bomber shelter; but on closer inspection I decided that its origin warranted giving further consideration. Thus, I found myself sitting down with a bottle of Lemon Chiffon Crueller Ale and a chilled pint glass.
I’m happy to report that any concerns I might have had about this brew being a bad choice were quite thoroughly reversed. Pouring the Lemon Chiffon Crueller Ale your glass is introduced to a beer with a warm golden color with slight haze and the most minimal of heads. This is followed by a waft of sweet aromas punctuated by notes of fresh lemon (without squirting you in the eye because you cut it wrong of course). After allowing the pint to breath, one finds that this lemon centric nature is not limited to what is smelled but represents the foundation of the flavor profile as well. This is not to say that Lemon Chiffon Crueller Ale is in anyway tart, rather holding the kind of citrusy sweetness one might expect in a really good Lemon Meringue Pie with hints of vanilla and marshmallow accentuating the bright fruit forward flavors. There is also a heavier mouthfeel than one might expect from a citrus beer, furthering the notion that this is dessert beer if there ever was one.
I’m incredibly glad to see that Rogue and Voodoo Doughnuts were able to successfully combine the items for which I hold both of these names in high regard so successfully. I look forward to trying the other beers in this pairing endeavor and hope that all of you can make this a treat for yourself as well. Cheers Everyone!
