So...finally have these things going...hopefully I'm using them correctly
Blog preview 2016: Time for a little old/new flavor…
January 6, 2016
Happy Belated New Year everyone! I hope everyone reading this (and the majority of those who aren’t) had a safe and happy one with the folks they care about. Now that we’ve all had a few days to recover and get back to normal it’s time to start thinking about the year to come and start making plans to achieve all of the lofty goals we set for ourselves (you know, like working off the Christmas ham and what not). I’ve done a good job of mapping out how I will meet the few but important goals I’ve set for myself, including how to best address the blog going forward. This has been a topic for much thought on my part of late and I’ve come to some important conclusions. This is going to get a bit ranty, somewhat cheesy and a little personal (if not a bit complain-y), so if you plan to keep reading you may want to grab a pint. Anyone still there? All beveraged up? Awesome, let’s do this.
Recently I had been taking an extended break from the blog, with a brief blip last month to drop a gift for the holidays (it’s the post prior to this one and it really has some cool stuff….). There were a few reasons for this, a need to tie up loose ends at work before Christmas, the holidays themselves, travel and other expected excuses. All of these may have been sufficient reason on their own, but were simply an added layer to the need to step back. The more important reasons, the ones that took time for me to admit, were compounding symptoms of something larger that I had failed to realize had happened at all. As fall began, I found myself worrying about what types of things I could write about to keep the folks who were reading entertained and coming back for more. As I published these posts, I also wanted to ensure I was writing content that the people close to me would enjoy. Eventually, when I would reach out to see if I was meeting these perceived expectations I was met with results that were both frustrating and disheartening. I found that many of the friends and family that would tout to others that I write the blog had never actually read it themselves. As juvenile as it might sound I found this to be more than a bit placating, much like having your art project put on the fridge as a child without it actually being looked at by the person you hoped to impress (eat your heart out on that one psych majors….). I also found that the number of people reading in general had slowed to a trickle, regardless of what had been posted the previous day. This led to me looking at the blog as something of a chore, one I found to be incredibly deflating and made me contemplate letting this site go quietly into the night as it were. As I took the time to consider this option I had an epiphone; I had begun to write the blog for other people rather than myself.
If you look all the way back to the first posts I had written (almost two years ago exactly, kind of like my cell phone plan….I should start looking for a new one of those…), you’ll see that I started Liquid Bread as something primarily for myself. I wasn’t really aiming to gain readers or make content for the people I care about, I was doing it as an effort to keep myself afloat by doing something constructive during the worst time in my life. In acknowledging this pivot of intended audience I’ve also had the happy realization that the emotional wounds for which this was a tourniquet have largely healed. Although I only have a few scars left from that experience, that doesn’t mean that I can’t find a different kind of personal fulfillment on this blog. As mentioned before I have a few large and lengthy plans in motion for 2016, and I’ve decided that part of keeping myself from getting burnt out from all of the work to come is to once again use Liquid Bread to meet my own needs, this time as a tool of relaxation and contentment. What does that mean? I’m glad you asked. It means that there will still be breweries and bombers of the week as well as Thinkin’ Beer and random beer related posts, but some other things may not be as frequent. Rather than brewing a beer for a contest, I will likely just be brewing for myself (and those of you who want to pop by the house to help me drink it) and share the recipe and pictures on here. Instead of spending hours on a Homebrew 101 post, it’s likely that I might spend that time reading a textbook and drinking a pint I’ve never had before. All of this is good, because it will allow the blog to be exciting again, for me certainly and hopefully for those of you who choose to read it.
This doesn’t mean that I’m going to be completely callas and narcissistic in my interactions with you all, just the opposite. I will always take the time to write a post that is requested whatever it may be (except for requests for fan fiction, even nerds like me have limits). I will also always respond to other communications I get from you guys, although it may not be right away. All of the ranting and raving (and minor complaining) in this post is all meant to convey one simple thing, there will be a lot of good coming up this year for all of us. Cheers Everyone!
